Volunteer Commitment

Those who volunteer to join the NCI team will be expected to commit to the training period which is described in some detail in the "Training" section of this web site.

The number of watches to which a volunteer commits is largely determined by his or her personal choice. It is however important that a Watchkeeper should be on duty sufficiently frequently to ensure that his or her skills are regularly practiced and there is no risk of below standard performance in an emergency because of long periods of inactivity.

The aim is that there shall be a two way agreement between volunteers and the NCI and that both the volunteer and the NCI will interpret this agreement in a sensible and practical way.

Memorandum of Understanding between NCI and its Volunteers.
(This is a guideline, not a contract of employment)

NCI Will:-

1. Welcome you as a volunteer.
2. Provide appropriate opportunities to help you assist in achieving our purposes.
3. Provide appropriate training and the right equipment for the task.
4. Guide and support you through your development in a volunteer role.
5. Treat you, and all other volunteers, fairly.
6. Ensure that you have a safe working environment.
7. Listen to your concerns if you feel that things are going wrong.
8. Accept that, as a volunteer, you will have other commitments.

In return, we ask you to:-

1. Be fair to those around you.
2. Comply with agreed standards, including uniform standards.
3. Be professional and loyal to NCI.
4. Talk to one of your NCI Station Management Team first if you have a problem.
5. Give NCI your time, and commit to the appropriate training.
