Otter on the Causeway

A sighting of an otter by several members of the public was reported to the watchkeepers on the afternoon of 17 May 2008.
Watchkeper Barrie Swinnerton went down to the start of the causeway and took this photo of the otter that was evidently in a weakened state. It was able to lift its head but made no attempt to get away.
The decision was made to call the RSPCA. The lady on duty volunteered to come and rescue the animal but was not expected to reach Rhossili for about 1.5 hours due to other animals requiring attention.
Barrie went to see the otter two more times, the last time being about 5pm. The RSPCA officer arrived at the lookout at 6pm and went down with Barrie to collect the otter.
Sadly however, by this time the otter had died. The body of the otter was taken by the RSPCA officer who hoped they might be able to ascertain the cause of death.
