All qualified Watchkeepers are required to be proficient in their use of Admiralty Charts.

If there should be an incident at sea within sight of the Worms Head Look Out the Watchkeepers will not only have to report the facts quickly and accurately to the Coastguard, but will also be required to monitor the situation and update the information regularly.

In order to meet these obligations, Watchkeepers must be able to :-

a) plot the position of the casualty accurately on the appropriate chart.

b) pass the plot accurately to the Coastguard.

c) calculate, from the tidal information on the chart, the probable direction and speed of drift of the casualty.

d) plot the likely course of the casualty, given the tidal information.

e) be ready to direct the lifeboat onto the casualty, using the "Call Connect System" if and when the need arises

A thorough understanding of Admiraly Charts and the information which they provide is therefore an essential requirement for Watchkeepers and consequently forms a significant part of their training.
