Timeless

A time for family and reflection... to give, to receive. For many, an event more anticipated than a birthday, which marks the inexorable march of personal time. Like the tidal pattern, a persistent, permanent pattern linked to the inevitable phases of moon and sun.

But here, again, is Christmas, to relish the joys of giving and the joy of acceptance of those things our dearest want to impart to us. So imagine my joy receding, as the tide may recede, leaving the still sands fashioned before me, blank, lifeless, unlike the turbulent wonder of the surf uncovering an alien beauty.

With anticipation I roll back the wrapping and expose the giver's joy, a timepiece. But what? Only one hand, a clock with a single digit. How can this be? A minute an hour, a moment in time with a hand sweeping its orbit like the seas sweep the shores in persistent repetition. No numbers to mark the period, no relativity with the orbits? But… hours before high and hours before low. Redundant minutes, seconds unwanted but indication of the sea’s state.

Joy recovered, pleasure points, a tidal clock, a lone pointer to the point of our Rhossili watch.

Tidal-Clock

And some interesting information about setting a Tidal Clock.
