1864 - The Desiree, a smack carrying coal, anchored in heavy weather hoping to shelter in Oxwich Bay but her cable parted and in dire conditions she drifted onshore. Three local men dashed to rescue the crew of three from the surf but the captain and a boy were still in trouble in the waves so they went back in again and dragged them to safety. The rescuers, John Clements of Penmaen and John and William Bevan of Nicholaston, were awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society. (ref 159)Latest Articles
