Novo Moro

1806 - The Novo Moro was a sailing ship carrying cotton, sugar, fruit, coconuts and hides, bound from Lisbon to Amsterdam. She lost her way in overcast weather and, having hoped to get bearings at the Lizard, headed mistakenly up the Bristol Channel. On Christmas Day she sailed too near Port Eynon Point and ripped her bottom out. The crew launched a boat and rowed themselves, eventually, to Mumbles, leaving the cargo scattered along the beach at Port Eynon. What was left of the cargo was later auctioned, together with tackle and equipment from the stricken ship, in Swansea. (ref 146)
