The Agot

1900 - The Agot, a barque in ballast, was driven ashore on Whitford Sands. The Rhossili LSA was alerted but, in the delay before their arrival, the crew were taken over to Llanelli and a pilot left in charge of the vessel. When help arrived, the pilot refused to let anyone on board, not even the Captain who had come back to sort things out. The pilot was odered to disembark "but by this time (he) had found the spirits and had taken more than he could manage." [The Gower Coast, George Edmunds.] The pilot finally took a direct route to the sand by falling over the side and the vessel, untended, eventually broke to pieces. (ref 001)Latest Articles
