1897 – The Imbros, a 1272 ton steamship carrying grain from the Black Sea to Swansea, grounded in fog on the Helwick Bank. The alarm was raised by the insistent sound of a ship's whistle and the lifeboat went out, to find the ship holed on the bank and taking water fast. The lifeboat stood by until a tug arrived to tow the ship into Mumbles but she was too badly damaged and ended up in the breakers' yard. (Ref. 034)
