Brechin Castle

1847 - The Brechin Castle was a Scottish barque sailing from Port Adelaide for Swansea with a cargo of copper ore and 120 bales of wool. These details were gleaned from ships' papers washed ashore along with wreckage and large quantities of wool. There was also a bag of newspapers and letters from Australia (the latter were dried out and forwarded to their destinations). The bodies of a seaman and a child were washed ashore but there was no sign of the fifteen-strong crew or the two families travelling as passengers. It was assumed the ship was wrecked and had broken up on the Helwick Bank. (Ref. 033)
