1888 -The Milan, a 1400 ton Hull-based steamship, on her way from Alexandria to Bristol, found herself at night in thick fog on the rocks under Overton Cliff. Both the Mumbles Lifeboat and the Rhossili rocket crew attended the ship, the lifeboat rescuing eleven men whilst the Rhossili LSA helped the others ashore. The Milan’s cargo of cotton seed was salvaged in case the ship became a total wreck, but the ship was easily refloated on the following high tide and taken on to Bristol for repairs. Along the cliffs where the Milan snagged herself, on the stretch of rock known as Slade’s Foot, a thirty meter long indentation – the keel mark of the ship – can still be seen today. The only other reminder of the wreck is a cottage in Overton still called Milan Cottage. (Ref. 032)
