Cresswell

1881 – The Cresswell, a 464 ton barque bound in ballast from Liverpool to Cardiff, ran ashore in thick weather under Paviland cliff. There was some confusion over the rescue – one man wouldn't fit into the breeches buoy because he had put on all three sets of his clothing to save them from the sea - but the crew were all brought ashore safely. At the inquiry it was found that the Captain and mate had made a series of miscalculations: the Captain's certificate was suspended for three months and the Mate's for six. (Ref. 024)
