Mary Jones

1850 – The Mary Jones was a brig bound from Pugwash to Liverpool with a cargo of timber. In foul weather she sought direction from a passing ship which seems to have told her she was near Bardsey Island off the Lleyn Peninsula. She accordingly attempted to set course for Holyhead and drove herself on to the cliffs below Paviland. The masts and rigging collapsed and people were injured and trapped in the tangle. Most got ashore with great difficulty but one seaman was drowned when the ship broke up around him. (Ref. 022)
