1879 – The Mary Stenhouse was the first rescue effected by the Rhossili LifeSaving Apparatus (LSA). She had been on tow from Liverpool to Swansea but the tow had parted and she ran aground in heavy seas below the Old Rectory. After abit of a muddle, a line was got to the ship and a man brought ashore. He enquired desperately after a boat which had been launched from the ship carrying ten of the crew and the Captain's wife. But the boat had foundered and broken up and all aboard had been lost. The rest of the crew who had remained on board the ship were successfully brought to shore. (Ref. 012)
